In everyday life, we need friction. Here are just a few, simple examples:
Walking
Driving
Writing
Pushing a cart
Brushing hair
I have a tendency to think of friction as a bad thing. I think it’s because I am relational and when I think of friction it is most often in terms of relationships. And for some reason I categorize it as negative.
But, friction in relationships can:
- Improve verbal communication
- Overcome barriers to connection
- Increase empathy or understanding
- Demonstrate affection or respect more effectively
I am working on being thankful for friction. Of course, the physical aspects of it — what it allows us to do. All that is worth noting.
And also in terms of relationships. Friction can be a signal that something is amiss. And straightening that out is usually worth doing.
In general, friction isn’t always about conflict and I need to keep that in mind.
Are you experiencing some friction in your relationships? Is there a new way to look at it? Have you been asking God for wisdom and insight into potential resolutions?
Blessings on your day!
